‘Autonomous learners take responsibility for their learning, not by chance but by design. They have been taught the skills, rituals and routines that enable them to learn and differentiate independently. When we have autonomy in our working lives we are empowered, motivated and feel in control of decision making. When we have orders that are given from the top down, or restrictive syllabi that tell us how to teach it is tempting to become demotivated, to feel disempowered and to respond with subversion or cynicism. In the work place autonomy is central to our motivation. So it goes with students.’
