European Conference for International Schools, Hamburg
Just back from the ECIS conference in Hamburg. My seminar was packed with 130 people sitting on the floor, in the corridors and standing at the back. I was very humbled by the reception. I do hope that they invite me back next year. Perhaps with a bigger room! I have been invited to speak at a conference in Arnhem, Netherlands next year and there are mumblings in Shanghai that may turn into an opportunity in China.
We Are The People We Have Been Waiting For
Last night Ellie and I attended the world premier of the new film on the state of education in the UK ‘We Are The People We Have Been Waiting For’. We loved the film, walked the red carpet, mixed with the great and the good and ate flying saucers! At the end of the film Paul asked the first question to the panel and spoke again in support of a revolution in teaching training. The film is going to be given away free with the Guardian on November 28th. Please show it to everyone you know so that we can open up the debate to the widest possible audience.
Guardian and Edge Foundation Seminar
I spent last night at the offices of the Guardian attending a preview of a new film on the uncomfortable truths of education in the UK entitled ‘We are the people we have been waiting for’. The debate that followed was lively and thought provoking. I argued that if we want to seriously change education in the UK we need to revolutionise the way that we train teachers. The Chairman of the Education Select Committee Barry Sheerman MP has asked to meet me to discuss our proposals for introducing a compulsory course in Behaviour Management as part of all training programmes. I had an interesting discussion with Sir Alan Steer and gently told him that the idea that all you need to improve behaviour are interesting lessons is nonsense!
