Taking Care of Behaviour online: FAQ

Q: How long is the course?
A: The course is self-paced but is designed to be completed over a term and is split into 18 different sections. You could, however, sit down and do most of the course over a weekend.

Q: Can you stop and start the course?
A: You can do as much or as little of the course as you wish in any one sitting. You can then return to the course when you wish to do so.

Q: How do I access the course?
A: The course is hosted online. You will be given login details and a password to access it.

Q: Can I get the course on a CDrom?
A: No, the course is online.  This gives us the opportunity to update and add to it frequently. So that the course you are taking doesn't go out of date.

Q: What areas does the course cover?
A:
The course is split into chapters. Chapters include: Consistency in Practice; Managing Your Own Behaviour; Rules, Routines and Habits Praise and Reward; The Assertive Teacher Applying Sanctions.

Q: Is your course suitable for Primary/secondary/FE?
A: Yes. The course will teach you how to manage and improve the behaviour of young people. The principles are the same for 5 year olds as they are for 17 year olds, it is the language and approach that changes.  The course gives examples from all phases of education and is designed for adults working in Primary, Secondary, FE and Special Education

Q: Is your course suitable for teaching assistants?
A: Yes, of course.

Q: Is your course suitable for school and college site and admin staff?
A: Yes. The course is primarily designed for adults working in the classroom, but many of the strategies are relevant for managing behaviour around the site.

Q: What support will I be given to complete the course?
A: As the course is hosted online, we are able to provide a number of online services. There will be regular times when a Pivotal Behaviour Trainer will be online in a course chat room and able to accept questions and give direction. There is also a Wiki section to the course, enabling those taking the course to collaborate, share and develop resources. There will be a chat area, monitored by Pivotal staff, for course delegates to communicate about the course. Technical support will be provided by email.

Q: Am I required to do an assignment to complete the course? The course is packed with action research tasks, which you should do as you move through the course, though you can progress through the course without submitting these. At the end of the course, you will be asked to create a resource which can be shared with others and can be used in your institution.

Q: Will I get a certificate?
A: Yes, upon successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of completion.

Q: Is the course accredited?
A: We are a National Award Winning Training Company with OFSTED/HMI plaudits. The course is not accredited by a university but are currently working with EdExcel, Pearson and Hienneman on a flexible CPD accreditation for teachers.

Q: Will I need any special software installed on my computer to do the course?
A: You need to be connected to the internet to complete the course. You will also need to be able to view Flash files. This is standard for viewing video online. You can download Adobe Flash viewer for free at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Q: How much does the course cost?
A: The cost depends on how many users you are buying access for.

Q: How long do I get access to the course?

A: The license lasts for 6 months.

Q: I have lots of staff, will they all get their own login details?
A: Yes. If you are buying the course for a large number, we will make sure that we liaise with your IT department to make course access as easy and well managed as possible.

Q: Does the course get updated?
A: Yes, the course gets updated frequently. Our trainers regularly produce resources and stay up to date with current educational thinking and government policy: this will be reflected in the course.

Q: I'm a parent and my child has challenging behaviour, will this course help me?
A: Yes, you will find many of the strategies in the course useful. Please be aware, however, that the course is written for teachers and so there will be some information that is not relevant.
